Here’s a slightly new way to practice getting position for 9 ball competition.
Remove balls 10-15 from the table so they do not get in the way. Just throw the balls out at random and start with ball in hand. Shoot till you mess up then just go around and randomly place the pocketed ball and start over. For this drill, don’t worry about shooting shots in succession, speed is the issue.
if you only make 2 balls then miss the shot, or hammer the position so bad you can’t make the next shot, just bring the 2 balls back up and start over.
The thing that makes this drill effective is doing it quickly. Shoot two shots quickly; run or screw up depending on your point of view but the pace and momentum keeps up and starting over fresh putting the two-ball run out of your mind.
A distinct advantage of rapid fire shooting helps you keep the remaining balls in the pattern you started within your mind—keep the action going.
Also, you will get more actual shots into your allotted practice time.
Keep your focus on the table layout throughout these sessions as it will help you in developing the position you want to shoot for 2-3 shots down the line.
